Como podrán recordar los vecinos más veteranos: en Somió hubo cine en general y varios cines en particular. No iba a ser menos esta parroquia del este gijonés. En este sucinto artículo abordaremos exclusivamente el cine de Bonifacio Lorenzo Somonte establecido en su propia casa: en Torreflorida. Lo cual no es óbice para que puedan todos ustedes consultar el libro Cines, teatros y salones de variedades en Gijón (1896-2018) que escribió el mismo que suscribe estas líneas, por encargo del Ayuntamiento de Gijón, y que también se trata de un capítulo de la tesis doctoral Análisis del ocio en Gijón desde una perspectiva geográfica (1850-2015) recientemente defendida y calificada con sobresaliente CUM LAUDE.
Sendos trabajos profundizan hasta el mayor de los detalles de todos los espacios de ocio que existieron de uno y otro tipo no solo en la ciudad sino en todo el municipio apoyado de un extenso corpus fotográfico y un atlas de cartografía temática de factura personal; por tanto se recomiendo su lectura. En el número 2470 de la carretera del Piles al Infanzón, el arquitecto Pedro Cabello proyectó, en 1945, una llamativa vivienda unifamiliar de estilo neoplateresco para el creador de GIFESA (la sociedad de festejos de la década de 1970). Torreflorida destaca por diversos motivos, en primer lugar por la escasa producción de este arquitecto, que era más bien de tendencias racionalistas; por sus trazas y su torre octogonal rematada con pináculos, y por su jardín escultórico.
Tras desaparecer el Salón Novedades (en la nave que ebanistería, de la familia Rubiera junto a Casa Espicha), Bonifacio Lorenzo Somonte acondicionó, en 1952, el sótano de Torreflorida para usos cinematográficos tras adquirir un proyector portátil de 16 mm, con el que también acudía a proyectar cine en las Dominicas y en el convento de Santa Laureana. Como todavía prevalecía la autarquía económica se nutría de películas de la empresa Castle Films que, además, no eran inflamables. Fue uno de los principales receptores y distribuidores de películas procedentes de las embajadas. Recibía películas de las embajadas de Suecia, Países Bajos, Reino Unido, Estados Unidos y, más tarde, Alemania (RFA); las mayoría venían dobladas y eran en color. Ese primer año funcionó como un cine familiar para amigos y allegados, pero en 1953 se abrió al disfrute de todos los vecinos de Somió.
¿Por qué montó Bonifacio Lorenzo un cine en su casa? Pues porque entre 1946 y 1952 —desde que hizo la casa hasta que montó el cine— no se ponían películas en la televisión, tampoco tuvieron televisión en casa hasta finales de 1961 y si querían ver alguna película tenían que bajar a los cines del centro urbano de Gijón los fines de semana.
Paulatinamente, la oferta de películas fue creciente y variada. En su mayor parte eran reestrenos, alquiladas, de embajadas —que iban a buscarlas a Correos— y de empresas o distribuidoras que quebraban y cerraban y las vendían baratas. Por esta razón, a veces, se daban estrenos Torreflorida antes que los cines de la calle Corrida. Excepto las películas de las embajadas, todas las películas eran en blanco y negro. Entre 1953 y 1954, las proyecciones de cine eran los sábados por la tarde y se anunciaban en el tablón de anuncios de la iglesia de San Julián y en el catecismo. De aquella había clase los sábados y su hijo, Juan Bonifacio Lorenzo Benavente (exdirector de la Filmoteca del Principado de Asturias), invitó a sus compañeros del colegio de las Dominicas al cine de su padre. Las películas se programaban en función del público acudiente potencial, por lo que se concentraba fundamentalmente en los trimestres escolares y se salvaba el verano porque iba menos gente. Es decir, se proyectaba cine entre la segunda mitad de septiembre y finales de junio. Entre 1959 y 1978, las sesiones de cine eran los domingos hacia la siete de la tarde; entre 1968 y 1986 volvieron a ser los sábados.
La distribución interna del aforo se configuraba a partir de hileras de sillas plegables —de la misma calidad que las de los cines urbanos—y bancos corridos de madera que podían dar lugar a un aforo aproximado de 40 espectadores.
